Apollo, the god of art and science was not interested in love until mischievous Cupido shot two arrows; the first to Apollo's heart and the second to the nymph Daphne. But Daphne outwitted Apollo by transforming into a laurel tree, the symbol of victory and triumph.
Every facet of Roman life was inspired by the Greeks in Hellenistic Rome, and Greek heroic nudity was the dress of choice for Roman statues. However many statues were later covered during the Italian Renaissance by fig leaves, the symbol or censorship and sin.
The only 'Egyptian' pyramid in Europe, Cestius' tomb was built in marble. Romans have always been fascinated by Egypt, and the pyramid, among many obelisks, is a testament to the period of Egyptomania in Rome.
